The lighthearted and ironic way in which he introduces the above passage in a letter to Brod indicates this: "What do you say about this marvelous piece of self-knowledge [.....]? It would be a good epitaph." In his family, Kafka probably did not enjoy many opportunities to have his wish to amaeru gratified. This seems to be especially true with regard to his father, as the Letter to His Father (The Basic Kafka 234) indicates.
