TIMED WRITING – A MODEST PROPOSAL
Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal is very satiric piece of writing. Swift uses many different tools to achieve his satiric tone, including diction and syntax. Because of the way Swift writes it is very easy to read his proposal and not realize that it is satiric.

A Modest Proposal is a very effective satire because it draws attention the poor and their plight. After the initial shock of reading this, the reader begins to think about the true message of the passage and hopefully becomes more motivated to help. But like any satire, one must look closely at this passage or he will come away without ever understanding its true purpose.
