umer didn't believe them. When he tried to wake Kat up he felt the blood on the back of his head. Kat had been hit with a splinter right in the back of his neck. Bäumer was now the last of all his friends in the war. In the following October he was shot. Recruits said he must have died quick because he had a look of calmness on his face.
