Since they do not mingle they have no opportunity to benefit from each other and many poor people especially miss out on opportunities that each other could offer. The movie illustrates this by showing the fathers approach in not wanting his daughter to associate with a poor person. It shows the separation in class. An interesting tidbit I believe the movie illustrated subtly and very well.
