Spheres of Influence
(Kingston vs. Rodriguez)
In the articles Public and Private Life by Richard Rodriguez (LS pg.282) and The Misery of Silence by Maxine Hong Kingston (LS pg. 269) I see two basic spheres of Influence that affected these children’s advancement in their struggle to understand English. was lacking some important pieces and failed to give the children a good outlook on English. The family sphere affected the way that these children look at English altogether, in the private use and the public use. Rodriguez had troubles with his family sphere, while Kingston had a perfect family sphere although it did affect her schooling. These children have very closely related stories, but the route of their development in English were vary different.
