Considering The Crucible and The Scarlett Letter, one may notice many similarities and differences. However, I have found more differences than similarities while comparing the two. The Crucible was a historical play based on events of the Salem witchcraft trial while The Scarlett Letter was based on a girl who committed adultery. The witchcraft trials grew out of the particular moral system of the Puritans, which promoted interference in people’s affairs as well as a repressive code of conduct that frowned on any diversion from normal behavior. In The Crucible anyone who committed such acts as adultery was hanged. However in The Scarlett Letter they didn’t hang Hester or Pearl’s father but normally they would be hanged.
