The Mother in the short story “Daughter of Invention”, by Julia Alvarez can be defined as an antiheroine, an ordinary, non-glorious, modern citizen you can easily relate with. The way she misuses aphorisms, her “great” inventions and the way she helps her daughter, draws you in and make you feel a connection with her.

husband disapproved. And when her husband tore up her daughter’s speech, she helped her daughter write a new, not quite as good, but respectful speech.
The Mother in the story “Daughter of Invention” isn’t rich or famous, and she doesn’t even fight crime, but you can still feel a connection with her. She reminds you of someone you know or even yourself and that makes her just as good as a heroine.
