Different times Different Worlds
The beliefs of the Puritans and the Deists, like Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson differed greatly. Puritan writers wrote private documents such as journals or sermons. Enlightenment writers such as Paine and Jefferson wrote for the public. They published pamphlets, speeches and documents to inform the common man. occupations. In Europe, men and women were thought to be equals and alike, even though men never sincerely considered her his equal. American women are also treated differently from European women. De Tocqueville says European men lavish upon women. “In the United States, men seldom compliment women, but they daily show how much they esteem them.” (245). Even though American men do not fall over themselves for women, they respect them more and consider them equals.
