Germania Tacitus's Germania is a thoroughly itemized ethnographic text detailing the geography, climate and social structure of Germany and its people. One of Tacitus's last acerbic comments in the book pertains to this tribe as he says, "so low they have fallen not merely from freedom, but slavery itself". He then signs off with the quote, "All this is unauthenticated and I shall leave it open".
