Another difference was that there was no real flashback in Hannibal but rather it was Clairse fading in and out of consciousness, which was symbolic because she had just been shot, and she was wondering where she was and or going. In Gladiator, it was a mere flashback of his past and memories but still accomplished the same idea of a passage of time.
