From Gothic art’s humble beginnings in France in the twelfth century, we find that we must study it outside the confines of time and learn of its surface area as well. Gothic art began with architecture approximately 1140 A.D. in a province known as the Ile-de-France which consisted of Paris and its vicinity. Through the course of the thirteenth century, the Gothic style gradually faded into the appearance of regional variety until the middle of the fourteenth century when these regional styles began once again to influence each other. This “International Gothic” style prevailed until shortly thereafter when Italy and Florence took the lead to create the art of the Early Renaissance. By 1550, the Gothic style had disappeared almost entirely.
