In my opinion, the crux was the central relationship between Hannibal and Clarice. Hannibal seems to be infatuated with Clarice. He is simply a madman with an insatiable appetite for the flesh of those who are doing wrong to others.
Hannibal is a very interesting and complex movie. By putting the smallest pieces together, you will understand the true meaning of his mutilations; punishing the evil.
