A Polished Society: Candide Compared to Jailbird
Though Candide by Voltaire is set during the 1760’s and Jailbird by Kurt Vonnegut is set during the 1970’s, many parallels still exist between the two. The two societies are still very similar. The characters in both books though they encounter very different physical hardships, the mental hardships and motives are similar. Candide and Walter F. Starbuck lived in completely different times many parallels exist between their lives.

Martin of Candide and Ruth of Jailbird have the right interpretation on society. “The most intelligent human beings were so stupid that they could only make things worse by speaking their minds (Jailbird p. 209.)” People are too corrupt, for the pessimistic are dead on when it comes to society.
