subjected to malnutrition, bitter cold with lack of warm clothing, harsh mistreating by teachers and many other hardships. Eventually half of the school falls ill with typhus and some students actually die. This calls in an inspection and eventually the conditions actually do get a bit better. We see through this that although Jane does experience many hardships it doesn’t call for her to give up hope and she keeps aspiring to move on.
