Langston Hughes
To understand Langston Hughes you must first know some of his genealogy. His
Grandfather, Charles Langston Hughes had taken part in political activism on behalf of a
slave. Plus Charles’ brother, John Langston, was a member of the United States House of
Representatives ( from Virginia) in the 1890’s as well as being a diplomat, a lawyer, and
an educator. So as you can tell Langston Hughes came from a family of African-American
activists.

continued writing up until his death.
All in all Hughes wrote over fifty books, which included short stories, poems, and
novels. But perhaps what Hughes was most well-known for was use of Jazz and Black
Folk Rhythms in his poetry. That is what made him stand out apart from the rest of the
poets of his time, and perhaps that is what made him respected by millions also.
