It is common knowledge amongst Americans that President Abraham Lincoln was
assassinated. But what many people don’t know about is the conspiracy surrounding it.
The uncovering of this conspiracy led to the first execution of a woman in the United
States. The resulting execution of Mary Surratt was unconstitutional.

inflicted in this trial. While I am not looking at whether or not Mary Surratt was guilty, I
do believe that the proceedings of her arrest and through to her execution were wholly
unconstitutional. And furthermore, I believe that had this trial occurred today, none of
these proceedings would have been allowed to occur. I also believe that Mary would have
been found innocent on lack of concrete evidence.
