In Sabrosa Portugal, Spring of 1480 a great man was born. His name was Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan was the son of a nobleman. His mother’s name was Alda Magalhaes. He also had a sister Isabel Magalhaes and a brother Diogo Magalhaes. As a boy he served as a page to the Portuguese Queen. Even though he died the crew decided to sail on and finish Magellan’s dream. The Victoria finished the trip. Captain of the Victoria, Juan Sebastian del Cano, sailed across the Indian Ocean, around southern Africa, and then northward in the Atlantic. Three years after leaving Spain the Victoria returned home with only 18 Europeans and 4 Indians.
