Mary Wollenstonecraft Godwin Shelley was the only daughter of William Godwin and Mary Wollenstonecraft. Her life though scattered with tragedies and disgrace, was one of great passion and poetry. Mary Shelley is best known for her novel Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus, which has transcended the Gothic and horror genres. Shelley’s other literary works were mildly successful their time, but are little known today. To understand her writing you must first know her background.

Mary Shelley was one of the most influential of the Romantic writers. Not only did she have to cross the barrier of being undermined as a woman, she also fought and gained recognition as a writer. In Switzerland Mary developed her gothic style prose, which is visible in Frankenstein. She, along with her entourage of rebellious writer friends, paved the way for younger writers in the prime of the next literary era.
