Most of Nicaragua’s population is a product of racial mixtures. Of the original American Indian population, only the Sumo, Miskito, and the Ramaquie tribes remain. Spanish is the official language, but there is widespread familiarity with English. The majority of the population is Roman Catholic; small Protestant and Jewish communities are concentrated in larger cities. There is no established religion. Nicaragua has a young population, nearly half is under the age of 15

violence continued, and one of Somoza’s sons, Anastasio Somoza Debayle, resigned from the presidency in 1979. U.S. relations with the newly formed Sandinist government worsened in the 1980’s over the issue Nicaragua’s supply of arms from Cuba and the Soviet Union to other Central American republics. The forced relocation of 10,000 Miskito Indians in 1982 and the defection of non- Communist revolutionaries from the junta and the FSLN stimulated increased internal opposition to the Sandinistas.
