This play is about a trial over Evolutionism vs. Creationism. Cates, the defendant went against the beliefs of the people in Hilsboro and is being punished for it. In the play Inherit the Wind Bertram Cates is punished for not conforming to the beliefs of the people in the small town that he lives in.
