You could almost go so far as to say that the society is acting like a bunch of stupid children who aren’t don’t think of the consequences of their actions until it happens to them. Mrs. Hutchinson was never against the lottery before she was chosen, but in the few moments before her death, she was scared and realized just how wrong she and everyone else had been.
