China has an interesting surface that slopes down from west to east in a four-step ‘staircase’. The North China Plain is included in the third step that begins at the line from the Greater Hinggan, Taihang, Wushan and Xuefeng mountain ranges eastward to the seacoast, with an elevation ranging from 500-1,000 meters. Running from north to south are the Northeast Plain, the North China Plain, and the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain (China).

China is facing many problems in association with the Three Gorges Dam. Change of the landscape, relocated people, health issues of its people and wild life are matters of great concern. But, the Chinese also recognize the need to develop renewable energy sources and end dependence on coal. The Chinese believe this project will allow it to compete in the world market with its ever-increasing economy.
