The Invisible Man won him the Nation Book Award and the Russwurm Award. It was the last novel published by Ellison. The critics initially said it was poorly written, but later praised to be the most significant novel written after the war. He was a charter member of the National Council on the Arts and Humanities. He died in 1994.
