Buddhism in China before the Tang Dynasty
Officially, Buddhism first arrived in China before 100 CE, probably through Southeast Asia and Tibet. Traditionally, “The Emperor Mingdi, who reigned between CE 57 and 75, is said to have dreamt of a golden deity who was later identified as Buddha, and this prompted him to send to India for copies of the Buddhist scriptures” (45, Roberts). horizons is incredibly benificial in terms of advancing art, politics, science and religion. By bringing in the new belief systems of Buddhism, the Chinese did more than simply expand their religious horizons; Chinese culture itself benefited from Buddhism. The new developments brought about by Buddhism’s influx into China ranged from poetry and architecture, to art and science. In the end, Buddhism would leave a great positive and permanent mark on Chinese society and culture.
