When comparing two movies about war, you need first set up structured criteria through which you will analyze each movie. and the stories of the characters. A lot of these differences are due to the fact that different directors each did them with their own goal in mind for the movie to achieve. I believe that each movie had surpassed the goals that were set for it, either in its reality, or its love story. They are both very powerful and touching; the kind of movies you think about even after you're done watching them.
