Throughout this book Spade lets his emotions dictate his actions. When he is able to control his emotions during a critical situation everything works out for his benefit. In this situation he is unable to maintain his emotional cool, which results in his violent nature, "The fat man said tolerantly: 'Well sir, I must say you have a most violent temper.'"(pg.109) Gutman says this right to Spade. In the end he does make a successful deal with Gutman, which shows us that Spade has the ability to get what he wants whether its through peace or violence.
