The first time I heard of Fa Mulan was at Sunday Chinese school when I was about ten years old. After learning about so many great men in Chinese history, like Confucius and Mencius, It was wonderful to learn about a heroic, courageous, and young Chinese woman. even dressed up as Mulan a few Halloweens ago. However, there are some major problems with the content and representations of what is “Chinese” in the movie. Ultimately, we have to consider how movies like Mulan perpetuate stereotypic ideas about Chinese and Asians. Different Asian cultures are separate and unique, and Chinese people are not all about egg foo young and chop suey. However, a popular Disney movie like Mulan conveys just the opposite message.
