The Cask of Amontillado Poe's “The Cask of Amontillado” is a story about revenge. The story begins with Montresor's vow of vengeance, foreshadowing future actions. Fortunato thinks Montresor is joking while Montresor bricks up the small room. Fortunato says “For the love of God,” and Montresor replies "Yes, for the love of God.” Montresor hurries to finish the newly built wall and reconstructs the old wall against it. The story then ends with the phrase “In pace requiescat!”
