The Castle: A Social Commentary? The Castle is unlike any novel I have ever read. This could be attributed to a number of things that makes the book difficult to follow. By no means am I stating that Kafka had no other intentions when writing this novel, but it seems clear to me that his two main purposes were to illustrate the bizarre and bungling ways that a large central government can operate and also how the deification of the upper class of individuals in society can cause for a great deal of instability.
