In the novel The Color Purple, by Alice Walker there are many references to the color purple. Purple is a very unique color especially in today’s society. It is the color generally associated with lesbianism, and was previously used in the Phoenician Empire to show that someone was of royalty. The color purple in the novel is a small device to show a bit of Celie’s emotions and thoughts through the novel. Although it is the title, you don’t see it over used in the book. With it, Alice Walker establishes a firm sense of what Celie is thinking and feeling and I don’t think she could use any other color to describe it.
