A Biography of William Shakespeare Shakespeare was a great writer of plays in the Elizabethan Times. He was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden on April 23rd 1564, in Stratford-Upon-Avon. In 1613 The Globe burns down accidentally during a performance of Henry VIII. The playhouse is rebuilt immediately on original foundations. This time the roof is tiled, not thatched. Shakespeare retires to Stratford-Upon-Avon and never wrote again. William Shakespeare died at the age of 52. He was laid to rest in the year 1616 in the Church of Trinity.
