Oliver Cromwell (Lord Protector of England) was not a king; in reality he could be described as a dictator. For eleven years after the death of Charles I, Cromwell and his Independents ruled England without a king. By 1660 the English people had their fill of Cromwell’s, Puritan Republic, and the monarchy was restored.
