Throughout the novel, Finny is forced to mature from a content child into a bit bitter and disabled young man. His accident was the main cause of his maturity; he left his boyish life behind to continue on with his devastating life as a cripple. Often people try to avoid change such as from young to old, both physically and mentally, but eventually everyone has to deal with maturity and must grow from it.
