In the book Like Water for Chocolate, women have the most control on the ranch. Men like Pedro play a big part, but women play a bigger part, because the book is based mostly on how certain events affect their emotions. Seeing as Mama Elena was the head of the ranch as well as a woman, that gave even more power to the other girls. She was always making sure they did what they were supposed to, sort of like the enforcer. This made the girls work hard and have more power than the men.
