Diluted bleach on whites clothes can easily remove tough stains, as can a cup of bleach mixed in hot water before dingy-looking clothes are added. Spot treatment (liquid detergent applied directly to the stain, or powder mixed with water applied and left to sit for at least 30 minutes) helps remove stains on colored clothing. The self-service washer should check a spot out of view with full strength detergent before applying it to a conspicuous area.
