When Beowulf slays the dragon a curse is laid upon his people for upsetting the
flow of nature. This pretty much dooms them for a not at all prosperous future. They
were doing fine until that thirteenth thane went and stole the flagon. This is precisely
why man should leave nature to flow on its own course.
