Horace (or Horatio) Walpole was born in London during 1717. He became the fourth Earl of Oxford and an English writer. Horaces' mother died in 1737, when he was twenty years old. This was a grave disappointment to him since he was deeply attached to her. Only six months later his father remarried to Maria Skerret. Maria Skerret was his father?s mistress. Yale University Press began to publish this collected, which included almost 7000 letters in 1937 and in 1983 the final 6 volumes were published. Walpole has been remembered because of his introduction to the Gothic literature. His effect and influence on Gothic Literature is tremendous. If it was not for him we may not even have Gothic Literature today.
