Harriet B. Stow and Ernest Hemingway give both their characters Tom and Santiago Christ like qualities. It is their Christ like qualities that set the two men apart from the average character. With out these qualities Tom would just be another slave and Santiago just another fisherman the qualities are also their to give the reader a sense of understanding of the character.
