Hamlet has made revenge his whole purpose for living, and although inside he doesn't really want to murder his uncle, without his focus in life, he is "A beast, no more" (IV.iv., 35). For this reason, he still clings on to it desperately, until Claudius' death. With this, it is only natural for Hamlet to also die because his whole purpose for living has been forfilled.
