life is like. "Time holds great surprises.", while being ironic, could also be the man expressing his faith things will get better for her, and in this way it may become a prophecy for her. We are left unresolved and the end of the sonnet, but we feel that whether or not she is able to improve her situation it seems she will be better able to deal than at the start of the poem.
