On the surface it seems that David paints a noble picture of his brother Jack and tries to use him in contrast with his own failings. If you read deeper into the book however you see that Jacks admiration it is not really very convincing and he puts down some of the qualities that make Jack a likeable larrikin, but to say that he damns Jack completely is an exaggeration. It seems more that David

nger feels a part of and a childhood in which he is looking to escape and all these qualities of Jack belong in a memory of which David wishes to forget.
In conclusion it is not that David is trying to damn the qualities that Jack has but rather is confused about them and his reasoning for questioning them is because he regards these qualities as a part of his past he would rather forget.
