In 1849 he made wedding plans to a wealthy Richmond widow,and set out for New York City, but disappeared in Baltimore. He was found five days after he disappeared drugged, intoxicated, and nearly death. He died without regaining consciousness four days later on Oct. 7, 1849. He is buried in Baltimore.
