Is it fair to judge someone by their sex? Sexism is a problem common to both Chinese and American cultures, and as such they are met by most of the characters in the novel. As you can see, in traditional Chinese culture, many judgements were made about a person just by observing their sex. The women in the Chinese culture were undervalued. Nothing was expected from them, and some had little or no status. The novel, The Joy Luck Club, portrayed how the women not only in China, but also in America, were oppressed and undervalued. It showed the male domination in the Chinese culture.
