Gatsby felt he was about to achieve his American Dream, his nightmare got the best of him and he died with less meaning in his life than when he was poor. The apparent theme of this novel was The American Dream, however, the less adamant theme found in this novel and expressed through Gatsby's poor decisions, can be better described as The American Nightmare.
