Between the 1860's and the 1970's, self-expression flourished. By showing people that it was acceptably to what you wanted and not what society wanted gave the writers full range when it came to developing their work. Katherine Anne Porter took advantage of this freedom when she wrote "The Jilting of Grandma Weatherall."
