regrets, so he would have a clean mind after the war. Fleming fought on for his fallen
comrade Jim Conklin. Crane also believed in the idea about fighting for a fallen friend. With
the hopes of redeeming himself in his eyes, Fleming fought harder than any soldier in his
regiment. In the end he becomes the man he wanted to be, a honorable and courageous
person.
