that he was deserves as much scorn as Hester. Nevertheless, it is evident that Dimmesdale had plenty of penance for his sin. His lethal sickness and the pain of guilty gave him his penance along with a scarlet letter of his own. After his death, Chillingworth has no one to seek revenge on so his job is done; he, too, dies. Hester having had her share of penance, lost her stigma - the scarlet letter.
