Nathaniel Hawthorne brilliantly designed this book around these three Scaffold scenes. As we look at the changes that the characters endure threw out the story we fin our selves sympathizing for Hester and Dimmesdale even though they have sinned. This is because when we look at what Chillingworth has done fare worse damage than anything that Hester and Dimmesdale had done.
