The Relationship of GI Science to GIS

Geographic Information Systems are a set of tools for storing and retrieving at will, transforming and displaying spatial data from the real world for a particular set of purposes.
GIS can also be defined as an organized activity by which people measure and represent geographic phenomena then transform these representations into other forms while interacting with social structures.

though with the development of computers and of course with satellite development and the increasing number that were being put into space. GI Science can certainly be regarded as evolving from the tool of GIS.
I think that the motives for creating GI Science as a discipline were to do with its importance to the GIS packages. Without the elements that make up GI Science, GIS would not be as advanced as they are today.
