The story takes place in a big city where social class separates two territories. On the West Side, the rich and high class 'Socs' reside and on the East are the poor and filthy looking 'Greasers'. People want boundaries that way they can have a purpose in life and a goal instead of always wanting what they can never get. I would recommend this book to any person 12 years or older. A younger child may still find this book interesting but will not fully understand the story that is going on.
